Mine are in the door handle on the inside and are a toggle rather than a knob or button by the window! That does not make it any safer, because they can still break a window!
Scary people are scary ... Think this is one reason our door lock thingys in UK got moved away from being visible by the window.
I've had to use the credit card trick though to get inside the house. Can't remember why though.
Current car scared me a bit, it has smart entry (key in pocket, grab door handle, car unlocks). Question was whether the smart entry would let someone walk by and open the doors with the keys close by in the house.
Locksmith inserted a flat, stiff fabric bag near the top of the car door. Then she squeezed a bulb attached to the bag by a tube. As it inflated, the door opened at the top only. She inserted a bar into the resulting crack and opened the lock that is a toggle and part of the door handle. We were in. Door was not damaged. It was scary.

Unfortunately locks only keep out honest people--and if someone really wants in they can break a window.

If they really want to get in, nothing will stop thefts. Try not to keep anything inside that is tempting to be stolen.
Wow! I guess the "slim jim" is old-hat now!
