THIS is what a very vocal few are getting their collective panties in a knot over, it's the text of why they're keeping their kids out of school tomorrow because if those kids hear the president speak, their little HEADS WILL EXPLODE and they will be INDOCTRINATED FOR LIFE by all this socialistic propaganda.

Am I the only person who sees the irony in keeping your kids home from school to avoid hearing a speech about staying in school???

Presidents speaking to kids is damn near tradition--it's something each and every one of them should do, I don't give a flip about their party affiliation--and so far I don't think it's ever caused a ten year old to implode right there in home room. And if you can't bear for your precious snowflake to have even a remote chance to be exposed to ideas different than your own...you fail at parenting, truly you do.

Parents will not learn. If you don't want your kid to see, do, hear something, they are going to do every thing in their little power to go against you! Each parent should watch this speech and discuss it with their kid! The best way to counter different ideas is to TALK. Have parents forgot how to do this?

My head has still been in a knot over my state passing a law that says school can't start until after Labor Day due to the impact of tourism.

I quit asking questions, but will not fail to follow and vote.

Here here!! And you know, I know that most of us thought Bush was a big ole idiot, I can't think I ever would have kept my kids out of school so they couldn't listen to him speak. This whole polarization is just freaking ridiculous.

I agree completely. In fact, if I were a parent or child, I'd be honored to hear the president in my school.

The children being kept home by their parents are the unfortunate ones, singling them out as oddballs, in a way.

Imagine all the propaganda those kids hear at home, both from their parents and from Glenn Beck on the tube.

Thanks for writing about this.

Even gringrich is saying parents need to let their kids hear the speech. Personally, I think a big lesson can be taught here that has nothing to do with the speech content . It used to be known as respect for the office of the president, something we've lost along the way.

We are a nation of morons, and people choose THIS to crusade against?

Amen, sister! Of course the last two presidents to speak to our schoolchildren were Reagan and Bush I, and I don't remember a conservative backlash then...

Are you kidding me? As soon as the alarm went off, signaling it was a school day, I shoved the kids out the door. If only for my own sanity. Who cares about what Obama tells them?

I let peopel talk to my kids about god and church and whatnot - and we choose whether or not to believe that, too. ;P

Anything is better than listening to a Bush speech. I think that dumbed down the entire population, let alone the schoolkids.

I would have even been in favor of a speech by Bush; our kids need to hear from our leaders, whoever they are; kids need to know they're important enough to be considered worthy by any President. Lord knows I thought Bush was a horrible President...but he was still President. I would have been all thumbs up for the same speech coming from him.

Me, too. Hell, remember where Bush was when the planes hit the World Trade Center? In a first-grade classroom, INDOCTRINATING THE KIDDIES...or, rather, reading a story to them, I think.

He was reading "My Pet Goat" while NYC burned.

Well, before I get clobbered, while the WTC burned.

I agree it's stupid to get upset over this.

We had an entire school district here in Utah refuse to allow the speech to be shown in any of their schools. Others left it up the the school or the teachers and some only let kids watch if they had signed permission from their folks. Sheesh

Bravo Thumper on both statements!!

Politics is so "us against them" now it makes me sick.
I wish my dropout, drug addicted, alcoholic youngest son (age 21!!!) had someone to inspire him the way our President inspires many now. Maybe life would have seemed less hopeless for him.

The thing that realy gets me is the fact that Arlington school district, which refused to show the Obama speach, is busing their 5th graders to hear Bush speak. http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/politics/Kids-Didnt-Hear-Obama-But-Will-Be-Bussed-for-Bush-57827022.html
