RIP to one of the greats; he broke out of the pulps and made science fiction accessible to the masses, and relied on the characters he created rather than the science. He was a once in a lifetime writer, and he will be missed...

I've been re-reading some of his short stories today. I saw in the news about many of the things he "invented" for his stories are now commonplace items we use every day. I liked "The Sound of Thunder" which put forth the theory that changing one tiny thing in history could have larger unpredictable effects on what was to come. We now call that The Butterfuy Effect because of that story.
I like the small town stories of ordinary people who encounter extraordinary things. The wonderful atmosphere and moods he sets are so palpable that you are walking down the sidewalk together with the people in the story experiencing the cool of the night or the humid stillness of the day.
I went crazy a couple years ago and bought his collected works -including a lovely edition from Everymans Library.
