More randomness...

  • After my first book was published, I would get an odd email here or there from people who had stumbled upon Charybdis and had something to say about it (usually good, which gave me warm fuzzies.) With each book the odd emails have increased...not a flood, mind you, but enough to give my ego a little jolt. But with the advent of the Kindle, I'm hearing from a lot of people, and my warm fuzzies are damn near hot flashes. It's cool, in a Sally Field You like me, you really like me! way. More awesome than the ego-stroking hot flashes are the reviews; I've been getting a few, and they've been more than favorable. The King and Queen of Perfect Normal has gotten some stellar feedback, and I think my head might explode.

  • Speaking of which, I have a few print copies on hand, and am willing to autograph and make them freaking invaluable. Oh yeah, because someday, I'm going to be a literary giant, and you'll want that signed copy ;)

  • Week two of NaNoWriMo hath begun, and I'm so far behind I might as well surrender. I should be at about 15,000 words and I'm at 2,250. It's possible to catch up, true, but I'm finding that the story line that settled into my brain needs more time to percolate, and the main character deserves to be better fleshed out, lest she become a caricature of a giant douche. Because really, she's just a little bit of a douche.

  • My laptop is fairly new, just a couple month old, and the freaking keys are sticking and falling off. This annoys me, as it requires me to go back and look for all the letters that just didn't show up. I'm tempted to create a post in which I just leave things as they;re typed, so that everyone will feel sorry for me.

  • You would feel sorry for me, right? Because sticky laptop keys are just wrong...

The Woman has been writing fervently on NaNoWriMo but thinks she won't finish because she will be gone this weekend and is not taking the laptop. Maybe next year. She also appreciates that real writers do like good reviews. She was part of a discussion on one writers book and she pointed out that it must have been particularly hurtful given the criticism came from a place that probably would have been her base. Someone snapped back at her that REAL writers don't worry about what people think. (REALLY?!) :).

King and Queen is on her Christmas list...

I might agree that writers shouldn't worry about what other people think, but reviews give you a foundation for knowing how well you've done your job. If I get a series of 3 star reviews, then I know that I didn't quite do as well as I'd hoped. It stings a little.

Some of the criticism a writer gets is helpful, but a lot of it is personal and nasty...those are the ones you ignore.

The review in question was kind of nasty and sort of personal. While I suspect the writer moved on and didn't let it bother them in the long run (it was just one review), however I suspect the initial response (as it was to many who participate in that forum) was "WTF?!" and being a little stung by HOW the reviewer approached the criticism.

I've only done a paragraph. but the entire story is in my head, I'm just swamped with projects which will pay my rent. I figure I can sit down this next weekend and make a huge dent. I've done 6,000 word short stories in under and hour, sans the editing.

I would be the one putting your keys back on in the wrong place, just cuz I have a mean sense of humor sometimes ;)

The very best keyboard I ever had went with an old word processor. The feel of it was perfect for me, and it never got stuck or messed up in any way. Every computer keyboard I've had pales in comparison to that one. Too bad I couldn't merge the two.

Has Max been drooling on the keyboard while watching late-night infomercials again??

It's a real shame about your keyboard. That must be a royal pain you know where.

This HP laptop has wobbly keys ... Sometimes when I'm typing, my fingers catch the edge and try to go underneath them.

Fan's also gone wonky after just 6 months - it's survived another 4 though :-) Think I'll be going Acer next time, they're getting a good rep for laptops. Probably a bit too recent though for either of us to go laptop hunting again ...

I always rub off the letters on my keyboard. Luckily, I know where they all are :)
